Article:
Überwachung und Kontrolle. Einleitung in den Schwerpunkt

Abstract

At the latest since the revelations of Edward Snowden, it has become clear to what extent network media and storage media are instruments of surveillance and control. But it is not only secret services that generate data from the use of media technologies. In the Internet of Things, in fantasies of big data, or within the quantified-self movement, too, events and communications are subjected to automated measurement aiming to control. The contributions collected here ask about a theory of surveillance and control that decidedly follows approaches from media studies. What insight can be gained from an analysis of the object? Do basic concepts such as «data,» «communication», «information», «archive», «memory» or «visibility» need to be seen and reflected on from a new perspective? Which theoretical approaches can be opened up? What might a political critique look like?
