Abstract

In the basement and in the attic of an industrial building in Cologne-Ossendorf there is now the legendary "Studio for Electronic Music", the former pioneer institution of the Western German Broadcast-ing Corporation – packed in boxes and exhibited without function. Between debates about scrapping it and future scenarios as a museum, the article sets out to search for media archaeological traces between the basement and the attic, thereby exposing different perspectives on the studio: While in the corporate and sound archive the materials of the tapes, files, documents and letters are illuminated concerning the process of storage and digitization and furthermore questions about cultural memory and garbage theories are examined, considerations about "dead media" come into play, for the studio for electronic music of the WDR in its current state being a "media-historical corpse".
