Akustische Fragmente

Abstract

This contribution is the German version of the introduction of Anette Hoffmann’s book Knowing by Ear: Listening to Voice Recordings with African Prisoners of War in German Camps (1915–1918), Durham, London, 2024. In this text she discusses her understanding of the linguistic recordings with African prisoners of war in the Berlin Lautarchiv as fragments of larger discursive formations, but also as aspects of colonial history and as a crucial part of the history of this project of knowledge production by means of recording languages in German camps of the First World War. She argues that the collections of the Lautarchiv and other acoustic archives may change when we listen to the contents of historical recordings which often inform about the practices of their making, and afford listeners to hear alternative, not too well-known versions of colonial histories.
