Rhythmus, Raumgefühl und konstruktive Suggestionskraft. Die sinnliche Wahrnehmung des Stadtraums in historischen Städtebautheorien

Author(s): Brandl, Anne

Abstract

The current discussion about a sensual experience of urban space is dominated by phenomenological arguments. Either the urban research uses phenomenological approaches like Gernot Böhme‘s concept of atmosphere or contemporary philosophers themselves explain the spatial challenges and describe atmosphere as a quality of urban space. The predominant argument is, that the urban design discipline haven‘t got own concepts about the sensual perception of urban space. But the theories of Albert Erich Brinckmann, Fritz Schumacher or Gordon Cullen show exemplary that there have been urban design considerations about the sensual experience of urban space in the 20th century, and terms like sense of space, rhythm or power of suggestion were in their center of interest. These urban theories can inspire the design of atmospheric qualities for the contemporary city. But they can complement and adjust phenomenological arguments too.
