Benchmarking – ‚sichere‘ Straßenmöblierungen und ‚selektive‘ Sitzgelegenheiten

Abstract

This essay examines the correlation of politics, law, and design in everyday objects of street furniture in terms of non-human agencies as filters. It deals with the socio-technical spatial planning thinking of city administration and media theory as to the prevention of anti-social behavior: benches and other seating that address certain bodies, influence their movements, and sometimes even displace them. Eventually, architectures regulate opportunities for participation, select possible uses, enable and hinder access and close selected places for some (‚undesirable‘, ‚homeless‘). Strategically designed and placed street furniture acts as a filter and gatekeeper and affects the publicly visible mix of what we call population.
