Visual Collaboration and Learning Patterns in 3D Environments: Emergence, Elements, Examples

Abstract

While virtual worlds and 3D collaboration spaces are an at times hyped research and practice issue, it is still unclear how to benefit from meeting with colleagues and peers in a 3D multi-user virtual environment with the aim of working together. Making use of the potential of virtual embodiment, i.e. being immersed in a space as a personal avatar, allows for innovative new forms of collaboration. In this paper, we present a framework that serves as a systematic formalization of collaboration elements in virtual environments. We thus provide a virtual collaboration blueprint to guide users in designing and implementing virtual collaboration patterns tailored to their needs and constraints (for example in Second Life or OpenSim). We present four collaboration pattern examples as a result of the application of the framework, and point out future research directions for this emerging domain.
