Trauer medial denken. Die Sorge um den Anderen im militanten Dokumentarfilm der 1970er Jahre

This paper investigates the history of radical left militancy in Italy in the 1970s from the perspective of mourning. Grief holds the possibility of apprehending the fundamental vulnerability and sociality of embodied life—an experience tied to feminist thinking on the question of «care», especially in its ethical dimension as «care for the other». Along with a feminist approach, this paper also suggests a media-theoretical reading: the fundamental otherness in the process of mourning is reflected on a film-aesthetic level by the presence of found footage material (in particular press photographs) that is a central feature of most militant documentary films of the time.
