Article: Zum Eurozentrismus im Begriff des Bildes
Abstract
The image seems to occur in almost all cultures, and for this reason alone, any preoccupation with the image should be differentiated not only historically, but also interculturally. How does one know what a picture 'is' if one does not know which „differently directed ... picture perception“ or which „other thinking of pictorial representation“ (Iris Därmann) still exists? In recent art history, there have been increasing approaches to break up Eurocentric fixations, which can be seen in efforts toward a „global art history“ that explicitly poses the question of culturally differentiated image practices and concepts. The essay follows on from this research and questions the Eurocentrism of the concept of the image.
