Book part:
Interaktives Erzählen in offenen Spielwelten

Author(s): Heuer, Thomas

Abstract

The following article discusses the possibilities of emergent narrative in open world games. Centered at the survival game Don’t Starve (created by Klei Entertainment), the article argues, that the waged war between ludology and narratology is no longer needed. A game presents an opulent stage with lots of embedded elements, which players can utilize to create their own personal narrative experiences. The argumentation is focused on the remarks about emergent narrative. DON’T STARVE offers a minimum of embedded story, but a lot of emergent potential to create an individual narrative experience for the player. It is shown, that interactive storytelling is possible, if the player is willing to let narrative happen, while she plays.
