Abstract

This article is dealing with students’ usage of media on the basis of empirical data, particularly focusing on their interaction with information in the society of communication. In addition to taking a look at the subjective practices in this context, it will also analyze the current framework at universities for producing knowledge and processing information while studying. Building on these insights, we can ascertain what role universities play as education facilities in a time in which they are not the only societal institution to produce knowledge anymore. At the same time, universities these days are confronted with a situation in which information and data is created in all areas of society all of the time. All of this information has to be taken in, processed and assessed by the students constantly in their daily lives. This article will show that established models of media- and information competence mostly do not fully reflect the reality, as they mainly manifest normative expectations regarding the actions of students. This article in contrast focuses on the students and their actual subjective modes of action as well as the institutional framework at universities.
