    Matter of Time: Toward a Materialist Semiotics of Web Animation

    This essay argues for greater critical attention to the impact of particular development environments and programming languages on the aesthetic forms of new media productions. Examining two examples of Internet-based motion graphics for the ways they have been optimized for web delivery, the author attempts to show that medium-specific coding and design strategies in digital literature set up another signifying surface that intersects with the manifest text on the screen. In this material dimension of the text's signification, we can read the marks of the small- and large-scale technical systems in which the artwork is embedded.

    When Hypertext became uncool: Notes on Power, Politics, and the Interface

    This essay describes some of the structural limits of authoritative hypertext works and of the cultural interface in which they are perceived by looking at new media objects such as Victory Garden, the AOL interface, and the Netscape/Mozilla browser software. Rather than 'unmasking' hypertext as not having the potential for resistance that it seemed to have, however, it is argued within a post-Marxist political framework that hypertext, when understood as the totality of computers that are linked through the internet, on a formal level does promote an authoritative shift in the politics of new media objects.

    Writing Electronic Poetry: Loss Pequeño Glazier's "Digital Poetics. The Making of E-Poetries"

    "The stagnation and repetition of already past contents and forms within contemporary poetry accompanies the absence of inventive literary criticism and theory, which in encountering contemporary poetry does not seem to know how to develop new concepts and paradigms." Glazier - scholar and poet - seems to be an exception. In his book Digital Poetics he discusses hypertext, visual/kinetic text, and e-poetry pieces in programmable media - useful not only for poets of the e-medium, but for all poets today.
