Practically all objects of interest within media studies are protected by intellectual property rights (copyright, patents, trademarks etc.). For this reason, the German Society of Media Studies and the Association of German Historians have commissioned an expert opinion on the legal conditions and limits that govern academic research practices as well as teaching in the discipline of media studies. The article discusses the main findings of this report and indicates some of the most pressing consequences, among others, the introduction of a fair use provision for academic research.
